Adam Shaw earned a doctorate in physics in 2024 from Caltech, where he studied quantum computing at the atomic scale. Using lasers and magnetic fields, he trapped individual atoms and made them interact to reveal the emergence of chaos and randomness, emulate the physics of materials and particles, and simulate phenomena beyond the capabilities of classical computers. At Stanford, he will improve upon the platform used in his previous research to make it process information up to a million times faster. This accelerated system will enable practical applications in computing as well as fundamental studies of quantum gravity, metrology (the study of measurement), and information science.
