Heonjoon (“Joon”) Park earned his doctorate in physics from the University of Washington, Seattle in August 2025. In his doctoral studies, he explored the rich interplay between topology and strong correlations in two-dimensional quantum materials. His work was instrumental in the experimental discovery of the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect—a long-theorized phenomenon that hosts exotic quasiparticles with fractional charge, even in the absence of a magnetic field. At Stanford, Park will leverage advanced microscopic techniques to probe novel topological orders, with the goal of uncovering states that could significantly lower error rates in quantum computing.
